Examples

As someone who has dabbled in photo composites in the past and subsequently spent hours trying to make them look convincing, I was really keen to try out Aiarty Image Matting and put it through its paces. One of the biggest issues for creating composites is matching the luminance and colour grading of the background perfectly with the subject.

Portraits

Oftentimes, no matter how well the software removes the subject, you can be left with a halo effect of lighter pixels around the subject. Fine if the background is light, but not so good for those dark, moody composites that we all love.

I decided to give the Image Background Remover tool some fairly tough cutouts to really test it. In this portrait, you can see that the subject has a lot of curly hair, definitely a tricky thing to accurately cut out.

You can see that it did a fairly decent job at cutting out the hair. Further adjustments with the feathering tool helped as well.

You can also play with the backgrounds, blurring it in several different ways, and changing it to black and white. I put the subject onto a close up of coffee beans (because why not?) and then played with the black and white and blur tools. Finally, I composited it into this rather lovely background shot in Iceland. If I was doing this properly I’d of course match the colours better.

I tried again on a self-portrait as my hair is often more frizzy and also a challenge to cut around. Here is the original:

It didn’t do a terrible job of this one despite the difficulties, and with some careful refining it could come out quite well – impressive! Again the colours are the main issue in the final composite.
