Other than Lightroom’s Reflection Removal, Adobe has introduced other interesting novelties in the latest updates. This includes a new update to Photoshop’s Object Selection Tool, which lets you select specific people or even individual body parts within an image.
In his latest video, Unmesh Dinda from PiXimperfect walks us through this enhanced feature. He reveals the possibilities for precise editing, creative retouching, and bulk processing, as well as some downsides to Adobe’s latest tool.
To get started with the updated Object Selection Tool, you’ll need the Photoshop Beta. Open the Creative Cloud Desktop App, navigate to the Beta Apps section, and install Photoshop Beta. Unmesh tested version 26.3, which is the latest one at the time of writing this.
The updated tool builds on Photoshop’s existing auto-select capabilities by introducing the “Select People” option. After activating the Object Selection Tool, you’ll see the “Select People” button in the options bar. Clicking it allows Photoshop to detect every person in the image automatically. From there, you can target individuals and even drill down into specific parts like hair, glasses, or accessories. The selections aren’t perfect, but give you an excellent starting point. After all, this is still in beta.
For example, you can adjust the brightness of teeth, recolor clothing, or enhance small details like jewelry. Unmesh demonstrates the tool by selecting a subject’s shirt and changing its color using a Solid Color Adjustment Layer in Multiply blend mode. You can also use this tool for retouching. Unmesh pairs this feature with a pre-created action to smoothen skin on a subject.
“Select People” really shines in group photos. Unmesh tests it with an image containing 37 people, and Photoshop detects almost everyone. You can select entire individuals or specific parts like hands or facial skin, making it easy to create localized edits or highlight certain subjects. Again, even if some details are missed, the tool provides an excellent starting point that you can refine further.
Make sure to watch Unmesh’s video for the complete demonstration and excellent examples, and if you’re an Adobe user, let us know if you’ve tried the feature and if you like it.
