Panasonic Lumix S1R II brings hybrid power with blazing AF and 8K video

Panasonic has officially unveiled the Lumix S1R II. This full-frame mirrorless camera wants to cater to both professional photographers and hybrid content creators. Building upon its predecessor, Lumix S1R, the S1R II introduces some notable enhancements. These include image quality and performance improvements for photographers and videographers alike.

Perks for photographers

At the heart of the S1R II is a newly developed 44.3-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor. Although somewhat smaller than Lumix S1R’s sensor, Panasonic promises precise subject tracking and improved focus accuracy thanks to the 779-point Phase Hybrid Autofocus system. The camera captures full-resolution 12-bit RAW images at up to 40 frames per second using the electronic shutter.

Advanced video capabilities

Videographers are not left behind with the Lumix S1R II. The camera offers robust video features, including 8K video recording at 30 fps and 4K recording at up to 120 fps in 10-bit. Additionally, the camera supports 6.4K open-gate shooting, suitable for various aspect ratios and creative compositions.

Design and usability

In terms of design, the S1R II is approximately 25% lighter than its predecessor. Still, Panasonic promises that this doesn’t mean they compromised build quality. The camera features a 5.76 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a three-inch articulated LCD touchscreen, facilitating easy composition and menu navigation. For storage, it includes dual card slots compatible with SD UHS-II and CFexpress Type B cards. It also offers the convenience of recording directly to an external SSD via its 10Gbps USB-C port.
