Canon has announced new v1.1.1 firmware updates for the EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras. The EOS R5 has already received one firmware update to help improve overheating issues and record times recently, and now it seems some of those improvements have come to the EOS R6 as well.
The major firmware update for the EOS R6 includes a number of bug fixes and improvements, as well as the overheating issue, while the EOS R5 update is fairly minor, just resolving a couple of compatibility issues.
YouTuber Cruisn Canada has installed the firmware update onto his EOS R6, and it managed to bump the record time from around 40 minutes up to about an hour and thirteen minutes shooting 4K 24p before the camera shut itself down, which is a pretty substantial increase – certainly more so than those we saw with the EOS R5.

- A messaging is displayed when [HDMI display: Camera+External monitor] and [Overheat control: on] settings are both enabled.
- When the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is attached, an image stabilization effect of approximately six stops* is achieved through collaborative control with the in-lens image stabilization.
*Focal length 500mm, Based on CIPA(Camera & Imaging Products Association) standards. - Fixes a phenomenon in which the IS capabilities may be degraded when performing continuous shooting in cases where the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens is attached to the EOS R6 running firmware version 1.1.0.
- When using certain RF lenses for movie shooting, the in-lens image stabilization mechanism has been improved.
- Fixes a phenomenon in which the “Slow Synchro” setting screen is not accurately displayed when the language is set to English.
- Fixes a typo displayed on the communication setting screen when the language is set to Korean.
- Connectivity during FTP transmission has been improved.
- Temperature detection and shooting time control in video shooting have been improved. In addition, the total shooting time when the short-time recording and power-on/off are performed repeatedly at room temperature is improved.
- The phenomenon in which the movie recording time available is not correctly displayed when the Date/Time/Zone is not set has been corrected.

One thing not mentioned in the video above (or if it was, I missed it) is how long it takes for the EOS R6 to cool down before you can shoot for the full hour and thirteen-ish minutes again. But it’s definitely a significant improvement to the record time.
I wouldn’t expect this update to extend your EOS R5 recording times any more than the previous 1.1.0 firmware update did, this new update doesn’t seem to address those on the EOS R5 at all.
