After successfully funding a Kickstarter campaign for the resurrection of Biotar 75mm f/1.5, Oprema Jena is bringing back its “little brother,” Biotar 58mm f/2.0. The lens features unique bokeh, and it’s very sharp even at wide aperture. However, one of its most interesting features is certainly the record number of 17 aperture blades.

The original design of Biotar 58mm f/2.0 dates back to 1927. It was officially introduced in 1937,but due to the war, only small numbers of this lens were produced. Later versions never achieved the dramatic bokeh of the original, and the newest version is about to change that.

The bokeh Biotar 58mm f/2.0 produces is quite versatile. Depending on the background, it can be dreamy, soft or swirly. It provides excellent sharpness and color rendering, and it’s suitable for different photography genres. Take a look at some of the sample images taken with this lens:

Biotar 58mm f/2.0 comes in five mounts: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji and Leica M. Take a look at the specs:

Oprema Jena has started a campaign on IndieGoGo to fund the lens. At the moment of writing this article, they’ve already surpassed the $50,000 goal, 22 days before it’s even over. If you want your own Biotar 58mm f/2.0, you can still get it at the Super Early Bird price of $949 and choose between silver and black version. The regular price will be $1999.

It’s stunning lens, early price is also VERY interesting (although it’s always expensive as hell).

So this is 100 times better than my early helios 44? No way, may other uninformed people buy it. Next to that the new Meyer Optic Görlitz lenses are real bargains and even have a more clever and good looking lens body

Or you can buy an original Biotar in good condition for around $100 (there’s one on ebay right now – buy it now price of $72)

Way to expensive. Read the 500px article on a photog who uses lenses by a Polish machinist who goes by The Bokeh Factory, and takes vintage manual lenses like Zeiss, Helios, Jupiter, Leica, etc, and creates mounts for both modern dslrs, mirrorless, as well as med formats. (I bought a Contax Planar 1.4 with Canon mount for my Mk4 for $600, including shipping from Poland) Beautiful lens. Check out the article, his fb page link is in it and save yourself a ton of money instead of this Biotar. https://iso.500px.com/bokeh-agata-serge/
