Nikon Releases it's Latest Superzoom Update, the Coolpix P1100

Nikon has unveiled its latest Coolpix model, the P1100 ($1,096.95), a digital camera designed for photographers who need to capture subjects at extreme distances. With a 125x optical zoom and a host of advanced features, the P1100 is tailored for enthusiasts who want to push the boundaries of what a compact camera can do.

The Coolpix models have been popular in the past, and I’m sure the latest version won’t disappoint either. The super zoom camera has even been the camera of choice for flat earthers! Here’s a closer look at what this new camera offers.

A Powerful Zoom for Distant Subjects

The standout feature of the P1100 is its 125x optical zoom, which translates to a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 24-3000mm. That’s an insane range! This means you can capture everything from wide-angle landscapes to extreme close-ups of distant objects, like wildlife or celestial bodies.

For even greater reach, the camera includes a Dynamic Fine digital zoom, extending the focal length to an impressive 6000mm equivalent. To ensure sharp images at such extreme zoom levels, Nikon has incorporated Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction (VR, not to be confused with virtual reality), which provides four stops of image stabilization. This significantly reduces camera shake, making handheld telephoto shots more manageable.

High-Quality Imaging Capabilities

At the heart of the P1100 is a 16-megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor. This sensor is designed to deliver detailed images, even in low-light conditions, with an ISO range of 100-6400. The camera also introduces support for RAW image capture in Nikon’s .NRW format, giving photographers more flexibility in post-processing.

Advanced Video Features

For videographers, the P1100 offers 4K UHD video recording at 30 frames per second. The camera’s powerful zoom allows you to record distant subjects in stunning detail, and frames from 4K videos can be extracted as still images. Additionally, the camera supports Clean HDMI output, which removes on-screen information for a clean feed when recording to an external monitor. An external microphone can also be connected via a 3.5mm jack, enhancing audio quality for video projects.

Intuitive Design and Controls

The P1100 is designed with usability in mind. On the back of the camera, you’ll find a 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD monitor with 921,000 dots, making it easy to compose shots from various angles. For those who prefer a more traditional shooting experience, there’s also a 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder.

A control ring on the lens barrel allows for quick adjustments to focus, exposure, white balance, and ISO. The lens barrel also features a zoom toggle and a dedicated Snapback button, which instantly zooms out to help you relocate a subject if you lose it at high zoom levels. Releasing the button returns the camera to its previous zoom setting.

Specialized Shooting Modes

The P1100 includes a variety of shooting modes tailored to specific scenarios. For example, the Moon Mode optimizes settings for capturing detailed shots of the moon, while Bird Mode is designed for photographing birds in flight or perched at a distance. Other modes include nightscape, light trails, star trails, and fireworks, making the camera versatile for different types of photography.

Enhanced Connectivity

The P1100 has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and operates under the latest WPA3-SAE and Bluetooth 5.1 standards. Nikon’s SnapBridge technology enables seamless photo sharing and remote camera control via a smartphone, tablet, or computer. For more advanced control, the optional ML-L7 remote (sold separately) allows you to adjust settings like ISO, zoom, and aperture wirelessly, making it ideal for tripod-mounted shooting.
