Mold is the enemy of photography gear and many of us will skip buying a second-hand camera or lens if it’s infested by fungus. But one optimistic seller has recently listed two really moldy Hasselblad 500 c cameras with 80mm lens and back. And I mean, really moldy!

The description reads that the speed focus handle is in working condition for sure, but “other than that you are on your own.” The seller is offering two bodies both with 80mm planar lenses and backs, with one body having a prism finder. You also get three super-moldy extra backs. The seller warns that people with mold allergies should not bid on this item, and I’d definitely give you the same advice.

Now, some minor fungus infestation can be resolved with soap, water and vinegar. But this gear is so moldy that I think it wouldn’t even be safe to use it, not even to goof around with it. Still, if you want it and think you can clean it (good luck with that), the listing expires on 26 July and the current price is slightly under $400.

1 gallon of pool chlorine… one trash bag … one deep dish bowl… place the cameras as is DRY maybe use a still painters brush on the outside… put about 4 cups of pool chlorine in a bown and place it inside the plastic bag too… let it be in there for 48 hours without opening… after 48 hours double check the hardware… most of the fungus will be either on the bag fallen from the camera or almost completely gone.
Proceed to a normal cleaning of lenses and interior .. they should be fine.and yes NO more mold regrowth.

They would make a fine pair of bookends or paper weights. A sand blaster and a can of flat black rust paint from the hardware store… job done.
