Viltrox has officially announced its 28mm f/4.5mm full-frame pancake lens for Sony E-mount (buy here) and Fuji X-mount (buy here) mirrorless cameras. Interestingly, the lens seems to have been available before it was initially announced, as we’ve already featured a video about it being modded to add anamorphic abilities.
Still, it’s now available to buy, and it’s an interesting-looking lens. Offering a wide field of view with a very modest f/4.5 aperture, it’s clearly designed to be a small and lightweight walkaround lens for travel and street photography. The price is also very lightweight at only $99.
Viltrox AF 28mm f/4.5 Full-Frame Pancake Lens
The Viltrox AF 28mm f/4.5 is a full-frame lens with autofocus. Its aperture of f/4.5, however, is fixed. This means you can’t stop it down. This means it’s not going to be ideal for all situations, and it’s not going to versatile enough for most paid professional work, but for $99, what can you really expect?
It’s a simple lens with only 6 elements and a 73.42º field of view. It’s also an extremely light lens, weighing only 60g. With a thickness of only 15.3mm, it also means that on some Sony and Fuji bodies, it’s going to make your setup small enough that you can actually fit it in your pocket.

It has a USB-C port for firmware updates, a 32cm minimum focus distance, with a voice-coil motor autofocus system. It’s certainly not going to be the best 28mm lens out there, but for many uses (and low budgets), it should work quite well.
