Adobe Firefly Video Model Brings AI-generated Video Into The Real World

AI-generated video has been making waves, but it’s mostly been a gimmick. It’s cool to look at, but it’s not exactly ready for primetime. Adobe is looking to change that with the Firefly Video Model, the first commercially safe generative AI video tool. In plain English? It means you can actually use it for real projects without worrying about copyright takedowns or legal headaches.

Now in public beta, Firefly Video is available in Adobe Premiere Pro (via Generative Extend) and through the Firefly web app, where you can generate short 1080p video clips from text prompts or images. And if you’re wondering about quality, Adobe’s got a higher-res 4K model coming soon.

AI video, but actually useful

Most AI video tools are more about novelty than usability, at least with commercially available online services. But Adobe’s latest Firefly update aims to change that by giving creators actual control – the kind of control you can get from locally hosted open-source applications like ComfyUI and models such as Hunyuan or even NVIDIA Cosmos.

The new Firefly text-to-video feature lets you:

  • Generate video clips from a simple text prompt.
  • Adjust camera angles and motion paths.
  • Turn rough 3D sketches into polished visuals.
  • Translate audio and video into 20+ languages (without the usual robotic weirdness).

And because it’s tied to Creative Cloud, you can move between Firefly and apps like Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects without breaking your workflow.

From the limited tests I’ve been able to do with Firefly’s new text-to-video feature – literally just 2 generations for their most expensive Creative Cloud All Apps package – it still has a way to go. I’ll stick to locally hosted solutions. They might be slower because they’re only running on a single consumer GPU, but they seem to offer more control and versatility.

That being said, the biggest pain point with AI-generated content, whether locally hosted or an online service, is copyright. Firefly avoids that mess by being trained only on licensed content (including Adobe Stock), so brands and businesses don’t have to stress about legal issues. On top of that, all AI-generated videos will include Content Credentials, which act as a digital watermark to show they were made with AI.

How much does it cost?

Adobe is rolling out two new Firefly plans – which is probably why CC All Apps packages are so limited:

  • Firefly Standard ($9.99/month) – Includes 2,000 video/audio credits and up to 20 five-second 1080p clips.
  • Firefly Pro ($29.99/month) – Bumps the limit to 7,000 credits and 70 video clips.
  • Firefly Premium – Coming soon for heavy users who need more power.

Is this a game-changer?

Adobe says that big brands like Gatorade, Dentsu, and Stagwell are already using Firefly Video, so they’re not just throwing this out there for fun. The real test will be whether it can produce high-quality, production-ready content—and how quickly it improves over time.

For now, it’s a promising step forward. AI isn’t replacing filmmakers any time soon, but it is making content creation faster, easier, and a little more interesting.
