Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S Lens

Nikon has announced its latest addition to its S series lens lineup – the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S. Aimed squarely at professionals, it’s a fast, medium-wide-angle lens that should appeal to photographers and filmmakers seeking a combination of sharpness, subject isolation, and creative depth.

On paper, the optics look impressive

With its f/1.2 aperture, Nikon says this 35mm prime is designed to create smooth, natural bokeh and help subjects pop from their surroundings. Three ED and one aspherical ED element aim to correct chromatic aberrations and maintain edge-to-edge sharpness.

To further combat issues like ghosting and flare, Nikon has applied its Nano Crystal, ARNEO, and Meso Amorphous coatings—features often reserved for lenses targeting high-end shooters. The design is similar to what we’ve seen on the 50mm f/1.2 S and 85mm f/1.2 S lenses, so Nikon appears to be creating a consistent lineup for those who need premium optics.

While the sample photos Nikon offers look decent, we’ll reserve judgment until it’s tested in real-world scenarios. However, the specs suggest it has the potential to deliver the goods. And with this price tag, one would hope so.

Built for hybrid creators

With the rise of hybrid shooting, Nikon has given some thought to video users here. The multi-focusing system, driven by stepping motors, is designed to provide quiet and smooth autofocus, making it suitable for video work.

Features like a clickless control ring and reduced focus breathing should help maintain professional-looking results when shooting video, without the usual frame shifts during focus pulls. There are also two customisable L-Fn buttons, handy for quick setting adjustments.

Nikon says the lens has been sealed against dust and moisture, and its design suggests it’s made to withstand demanding environments. Whether it’s rugged enough for heavy outdoor use remains to be seen, but it does look like a serious tool for professionals who don’t want to baby their gear.
