Tamron has introduced its first lens for Canon’s RF mount: the 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD ($659). Designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras, it offers ultra-wide to wide-angle coverage in a portable package.

This lens adds a fast f/2.8 zoom option to the growing RF APS-C lineup. Compact and lightweight, it’s aimed at photographers seeking versatility without sacrificing image quality.

A Lens with History

The 11-20mm F2.8 isn’t entirely new. Tamron originally launched it for Sony E-mount ($699) APS-C cameras back in 2021. Following its success, a Fujifilm X-mount version ($699) arrived in 2023. The RF mount version saw a development announcement in April. The new announcement now broadens its reach to Canon mirrorless users.

With a full-frame equivalent focal range of 17.6–32mm, this lens excels at wide-angle shooting. At 84.2mm long and just 340g, it’s easy to carry for travel, events, or everyday shooting. The constant f/2.8 aperture is ideal for low light and creative depth of field, though sharpness at wide apertures remains to be seen.

Features That Encourage Creativity

A key highlight is the lens’s close focusing ability. At 11mm, it can focus as close as 5.9 inches, offering a 1:4 magnification ratio for wide-angle macro-style shots. This allows for unique perspectives and striking subject isolation.

Tamron’s RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent Drive) autofocus motor promises quick, quiet focusing, perfect for both stills and video. Outdoor shooters will appreciate the weather-resistant construction and fluorine-coated front element for added durability.

Optical Design and Image Quality

The lens features 12 elements in 10 groups, including specialised glass to reduce aberrations and distortion. Tamron’s BBAR-G2 coating minimizes ghosting and flare in backlit conditions. While specs suggest strong performance, real-world results will tell if it lives up to expectations. I think it’ll be pretty close to the Sony and Fuji versions, though.

Price and Availability

The Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD is available to pre-order now for $659. Shipping is scheduled to begin in mid-December.
